Haiti: Holy Union Sisters

January 24, 2010
Region 1

Three Holy Union Sisters, one American and two Irish sisters live in Port au Prince. There was no contact with them except for word from the US State Department that the American sister, Eileen Davey, was alive. Two days later, a young Cameroonian sister, Elizabeth Kunsah, who had arrived in Haiti in September, traveled by bus from St. Michel, a small town north of the capital, to see if the sisters were safe. Elizabeth learned that their home and the parish church were the only buildings standing in their neighborhood. The sisters were going among the people, visiting the local hospital to ascertain the situation of their parishioners. Each night they slept with their neighbors in a nearby field. When Sr. Elizabeth returned to St. Michel, she was able to get the news out via satellite telephone. She called Cameroon and the regional superior there relayed the message to the sisters in the United States and the entire international congregation.

On Saturday, January 23, thanks to Ken Hackett, Director of Catholic Relief Services, Sr. Eileen was able to speak with Sr. Paula Coelho, a member of the US province leadership team again via satellite telephone. Of the 90 children in Sr. Eileen's early childhood education and nutrition center, 88 children survived. But everyone the sisters know has lost family members. The sisters in Port au Prince will soon have a satellite telephone and be able to give news of their situation. Holy Union Sisters from Cameroon, France, Ireland, and the United States have ministered in Haiti since 1987.
