Haiti: Sisters of St. Anne

January 20, 2010
Region 1

Just as other congregations of men and women throughout the world as well as every Haitian, the Sisters of St. Anne, who have been in Haiti since 1946, rode the emotional roller-coaster ride of not knowing, of not hearing, of not being in contact with those directly affected by last week’s earthquake in Haiti.

After several frenetic days of attempting to contact our sisters through every possible outlet at the national and international level, we learned that one of our Haitian Sisters had been killed while attending classes at the university.  Miraculously, there were no other major injuries among our other Sisters.  Five of our schools have been destroyed as well as two residences.  Our Provincial House also suffered damage sufficient to make it unsafe.  Several of our Haitian Sisters living outside of Haiti still await word about loved ones.

Now, one week later, the roller coaster has slowed somewhat. Our formation personnel have moved to residences in other parts of Haiti.  Those Sisters still remaining in Haiti are living outside.  They do have supplies.  We do not have any regular communication which hampers planning and assessing.
We join the world in praying for the people of Haiti and for their country.

To gain more information and a more complete picture of the Sisters of St. Anne in Haiti following the earthquake, we are making our website available to the NCNWR membership.
