Saint Benedict's Monastery Receives Artwork Conservation Grant

The Haehn Museum at Saint Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph, Minn., received $4,818 for artwork conservation from the Minnesota Historical Society. The grant is one of 30 awarded in the first round of the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Fast Track Grants.

The grant will be used to conserve two important pencil drawings in the archive of the monastery's Art-Needlework Department. They are both by Sister Justina Knapp (1893-1954), who was directress of the department for 45 years and was recognized in 1992 by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts as one of six women in the state of Minnesota who made significant contributions to the arts. The first drawing is of Mary and Child and the other is of St. George and the Dragon. The goal is to restore and prepare them for safe storage and for display in the museum with the finished needlework piece. The pieces will also be added to Minnesota Reflections of the Minnesota Digital Library. The conservation work will be done by Elizabeth Buschor, senior paper conservator at the Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC).
