Sister of St. Joseph of Springfield Publishes Book on History of Congregation

March 3, 2009

HOLYOKE, MA -- The history of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield comes to life with anecdotes about the changes that occurred following Vatican II in a new book by Sister Kathleen Keating. Titled, Uncommon Trust In God: The Recent History of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Springfield, the book of essays updates and interprets events as they relate to the congregation over the past 25 years.

The book explores membership, spirituality, ministry, planning, leadership and governance set in the context of the renewal of religious life brought about by the second Vatican Council (1961-65). The essays explain how changes made then have shaped the lives of the congregation and its members ever since. The book includes two appendices: one demonstrates how the College of our Lady of the Elms, founded by the Sisters, was rooted in social justice from its beginning in 1928. The other details the steps taken to bring about the merger of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rutland, Vermont with the SSJ Springfield Congregation.

Sister Keating is a native of Springfield and has been a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 57 years. She holds a Masters Degree from Villanova University and a Doctorate from Fordham University. She taught at the high school and college levels, served as president of her congregation and president of the College of Our Lady of the Elms, and spent four years doing missionary work in Nicaragua. Currently, she works part-time for her congregation as Coordinator of Ministerial Resources.
