Update from NCNWR Region 9

LCWR
On September 30, NCNWR met with the Region 9 LCWR Legislative Network to discuss how the two groups could collaborate. Following that meeting, S. Agnes Johnson, Racine Dominican vice president and NCNWR liaison, gave a report at the Region 9 LCWR meeting. The leadership was happy to learn communicators had met with the Legislative Network and encourages the two groups to work more closely together. LCWR also wants NCNWR to keep the “Sisters for Justice” bank account active for future collaborative efforts, such as the death penalty ads we placed in newspapers in the past.

Collaborative Ads
Thirteen communities participated in a three-part collaborative ad series in the five diocesan papers of Wisconsin this fall under the umbrella theme of “Catholic Sisters Lighting the Way.” The first ad, run on September 18, focused on the September 21 World Peace Day; the second, run at the end of October, encouraged people to vote; and the third, run in early December, carried an Advent/Christmas message.

Though the communities do not have a way to quantify the impact of their joint ads, they were pleased with the collaborative process in showing unity among religious congregations in communicating their message.

Legislative Network Collaboration
Early in December, S. Agnes Johnson (NCNWR liaison) and Jean Mullooly (NCNWR Region 9 representative) met with the Region 9 Legislative Network representative and the LCWR Legislative Network liaison to clarify the hopes/expectations of LCWR and determine next steps. Two members of NCNWR and two members of the Legislative Network will serve on a communication sub-committee. They will use Skype to begin meeting in January, since committee members are located in various parts of Wisconsin. The goal of the sub-committee will be to help communities speak with one voice regarding justice issues.
