NewsLocal Sister Ready to Present an Inconvenient Truth
October 27, 2008 Davenport, Iowa--The Climate Project (TCP) held its first U.S. training session in 18 months Oct. 8-10 in Nashville, Tenn. TCP's first-ever Faith Community Training, led by Nobel Laureate Al Gore, resulted in the addition of 135 new TCP presenters to a base of dedicated volunteers. The field of new trainees was composed of a diverse group of faith leaders, with some trainees representing the laity and others the ministry. The trainees were selected through a nomination process. As he has in previous TCP training sessions, Gore instructed the group members on how to present his famous slide show and how to talk to their peers about global warming. This time, though, he discussed climate change in the context of the faith community's perspectives on the issue. Sr. Cathleen Real, a member of Davenport’s Congregation of the Humility of Mary, was one of those faith leaders selected to attend the training. She returned from Nashville, energized to go out into the community and share what she has learned. She said, “Global Warming will become an urgent problem if we do not act now. Through Mr. Gore’s training, I have received materials to provide valuable information about the science and consequences of global warming. All of us, especially Americans who use a disproportionate amount of the world’s resources, need to change our attitude toward energy, food, packaging, and consumerism in general, in order to share God’s gifts with all. Finding new energy sources and reducing our use of resources is a moral imperative, one I look forward to discussing with others in the Quad City Area.” Sr. Cathleen previously was the co-director of Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat near Wheatland, Iowa and is a former math professor and college president. "People of faith are vital to the effort to combat the climate crisis and represent all walks of life," said Gore. "This new group of trainees is absolutely amazing. I am certain that they will have a tremendous impact as they return home to their congregations and communities all across the United States." Also attending the training from Iowa were Tim Fink, Executive Director of Iowa Interfaith Power and Light in Des Moines; Rob Hogg, Iowa State Representative from Cedar Rapids; and Phillip Cox, a physics teacher at Dowling High School, in Des Moines. These four individuals are now available for presentations. Those interested in scheduling a presentation can do so by going to The Climate Project website http://www.theclimateproject.org.
