Pamela Brookens from Sisters of St Francis of the Holy Family

Pamela Brookens Communications Director Sisters of St Francis of the Holy Family Dubuque, Iowa How long have you been with the Sisters of St Francis? 7 years
What is the mission of your congregation? Rooted in the gospel and in the spirit of St. Francis and Clare, the Sisters of St. Francis live in right relationship with all creation.
List the major ministries in which your congregation is engaged. Familiarly known as Dubuque Franciscans, the congregation began its years of service in the United States in Iowa City, establishing the first Catholic orphanage in the state. Dubuque became home in 1878 when Bishop Hennessy invited Mother Xavier to come and establish a diocesan orphanage. Sisters live and work in 23 states in the U.S., from California to Washington D.C., and from Alaska to Texas. They also serve in Honduras. The sisters minister in many different ways through education, healthcare, social work, pastoral ministry and in a variety of other works.
What do you find most rewarding about your work? I love what I do and working with the Franciscan Sisters just makes it all that much better. They are very loving and are always there to lend an encouraging word. The Franciscans have a deep reverence for all creation which fits into my values. Their commitment to peacemaking and standing with persons who are poor are inspiring to me. I have since become an Associate and I feel closer to the Franciscans more than ever which makes my job a little easier.
What is most challenging about your position? Struggling to balance work and family are the most challenging. My strengths are in marketing and graphic design so the writing aspect of this position is sometimes challenging for me but I enjoy it.
How long have you been a member of NCNWR? 7 years
What aspects of your NCNWR membership are you most appreciative of? I enjoy the sharing of information through our list serve and especially like getting together for our annual conference. It is always fun to see the faces behind the emails and listen to what others are doing in their congregations.
