Peruvian crucifixFour Peruvian Crucifixes

Two women make these crucifixes from cement bags. They are among the poor who live on a desert plain near Ilo, Peru.  The poor first live in a woven straw dwelling and then slowly some are able to begin constructing a simple home. Because people add to their home as they can afford to, the brown paper cement bags become available.

The paper is cut for each part, soaked in glue and then wrapped around nails of different sizes. The nose is a separate piece, and the crown of thorns is braided. Tremendous patience is required for the intricate work. The utter simplicity of each cross made from recycled paper speaks of faith, hope, endurance and creativity.

Donated by Ruth Jeppesen, Director of Communications, Sisters of Charity-Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Value: $10 each

Quilt15th Anniversary Quilt

Made especially for NCNWR’s 15th Anniversary Silent Auction, this quilt is submitted in gratitude for the nurturing and friendship that NCNWR has provided me throughout the 15 years I have been a member. I chose colors that represent nurturing and a pattern that illustrates our interconnectedness as an organization. The quilt measures 45 inches square. It has a hanging “sleeve” attached on the back for use as a wall hanging, or it can be used as a table topper over a coordinating solid-color fabric. It might also be used as a throw or lap quilt. I did the piecing using a pattern from a book by Carol Doak, an expert in foundation piecing. For the quilting, I used a technique known as "stitching in the ditch" along with a bit of subtle decorative stitching. It is my hope that this quilt will not only provide funding for NCNWR, but also offer a lifetime of joy to its recipient!
